Karuno began with Nova and Aiki, two people brought together by a shared love of hiking, lightweight travel, and time spent in nature.

After COVID-19, we began to reconsider how we wanted to live and spend our time. The outdoors gave us space to slow down, reconnect with nature, and imagine a different future. What began as a personal change gradually became the starting point for Karuno—a new way for us to work, live, and stay close to the outdoors.

The name "Karuno" is derived from Japanese, meaning "lightweight" and "wild".

Karuno Outdoor is a Hong Kong-based outdoor retailer founded in 2023. We carefully select outdoor gear and apparel from independent makers and established brands around the world, with a particular focus on ultralight design. We look for products that balance performance, durability, weight, and real-world usefulness—because more gear is not always better, but the right gear can make a real difference.

Karuno first took shape in a tiny five-cubic-metre storage unit in the city. There was barely enough room for the first boxes, yet it became the place where we packed every order, learned from every customer, and slowly turned an idea into something real.

Our next step was a 20-square-metre shop. Small and simple, it gave us our first place to meet customers, share the gear we believed in, and build a community around thoughtful outdoor travel.

Today, Karuno has grown into an approximately 80-square-metre showroom and studio. Every move has given us more space, but our approach remains the same: grow carefully, choose with intention, and never forget the five-cubic-metre room where it all began.

We believe outdoor travel can be lighter, more thoughtful, and more personal. Our goal is to keep discovering well-designed equipment, support the makers behind it, and create a place where people can find gear they will genuinely use and trust.

As Karuno grows, we want to stay curious, independent, and close to the community that brought us here. Wherever your journey begins, we hope to help you carry thoughtfully, move freely, and enjoy the wild in your own way.
